Best CBD Oil for Focus and Concentration

Not having a good attention span or not being able to stay concentrated during a lecture is something we can all relate to. Some may have mild concentration issues whilst some may have severe ADHD and small attention spans.

Not being able to stay focused can be both frustrating and discouraging as it is something that will affect your day to day life. My fellow students, I know how you feel and you’re not alone. Being stuck on a simple task and not being able to complete it until the deadline can really take a toll on the mental health and self-esteem of a young mind.

According to 2016 parent’s survey statistics, approximately 9.4% of children show symptoms of ADHD which accounts for around 6 million children ranging from the age of 2 to 11. Around 13.6% of teens also suffer from concentration issues and ADHD which meddles with their attention span.

Even though ADHD doesn’t affect senior individuals as much, there is still a ratio of about 0.96% of adults developing ADHD in the after age, most being women. CBD has made its name as a potential treatment for epilepsy and ADHD in the past few years.

CBD is being worked on more and more and being included more and more in medicines and treatment regimens. We know as of now that CBD cannot cure a disease but the soothing and healing properties of CBD allow it to be used against the symptoms such as anxiety, fidgeting, and of course, difficulty in concentration.

Best CBD Oil for Focus and Concentration – Buying guide

What is CBD Oil

CBD or cannabidiol is a botanic chemical extracted from cannabis or any other hemp plant. This chemical can be extracted by several methods, most commonly the CO 2 extraction method. The medicinal properties of CBD cannot be overlooked at this point.

There have been a few reported studies and research papers talking about the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the chemical. Although the reported work is not much it is promising. What has kept the research work on CBD low to none is the negative stigma around its source plant.

Hemp plants are banned in almost all states to this day due to their growing use as a recreational drug. These plants have a psychoactive chemical called THC or tetrahydrocannabinol.

This THC is what creates that high effect. What it does is that THC binds itself to the endocannabinoid receptors in place of cannabinoids and over stimulates the senses and exaggerates the sensation of touch, sight, etc. Since THC is a psychoactive drug, it will cause dependency.

CBD, on the other hand, is not psychoactive and is strictly medicinal. CBD does not cause dependency and doesn’t have a recreational effect.

How does it work?

CBD works differently than THC. CBD works by only blocking the receptors of the endocannabinoid receptors so that stress-inducing chemical molecules or other harmful chemical molecules do not bind to it.

CBD cannot actually bind to the endocannabinoid receptors as it doesn’t have the right structural configuration for it. This ensures that no unwanted pathway is triggered by accidental binding.

The endocannabinoid system in humans has 2 main receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors handle the sensation of concentration and focus and appetite and are hence our main target. CB2 handles a huge portion of the immune system and is associated with the sensation of pain and other nerve messages.

CBD works by encouraging the body to produce its endocannabinoids which then induces wakefulness, activeness and of course, induces concentration and attentiveness.

CBD and ADHD

Anecdotal evidence gathered has hinted that CBD can have a great impact on ADHD symptoms. First, we need to know what ADHD is. ADHD or Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a mental health disorder that deals with the prevalent patterns of impulsive behavior and inability to stay focused for a longer time.

This includes fidgeting and constantly jerking and yes, anxiety as well. As discussed earlier, this disorder affects children and teens more than adults. ADHD is further divided into 3 categorical types based on the dominant symptoms being projected. It’s either,

  • Inattentive Type
  • Impulsive Type
  • Combination of both types

Since we already know that CBD has not been studied as much to exactly to what extent does this help in ADHD is any. CBD oils don’t exactly cure the disease but they help in relaxing the symptoms.

People suffering from ADHD usually have anxiety as a clear and dominating symptom. CBD has been known to ease fidgeting and anxiety. CBD oil helps to improve attentiveness by stimulating a response from dopamine receptors.

Dopamine acts as a neurotransmitter and is largely responsible for memory and focus. Not being able to exude attentive behavior can lead to a lack of neurotransmitters to convey the messages. This is the cause of lost attention or concentration and focus.

Other uses of CBD Oil

Now, as we know that CBD has more than one function and can help in more than one way. CBD not only soothes the anxiety and fidgeting but also helps with improving focus and concentration as well.

CBD being anxiety relief is the breakthrough for CBD based products. As we know already, mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and others can’t be cured directly just like physical wounds and injuries.

The symptoms of these disorders that meddle with everyday life need to be treated. All types of anxiety are prevalent symptoms of most mental disorders. CBD being anti-anxiety is a great stepping stone in finding the cure for mental disorders.

Other than that, CBD has also been seen to be to strengthen memory. Multiple case studies have shown that patients of dementia or Alzheimer’s who took doses of CBD oil regularly were able to recall things in a setup test more than the control group.

CBD has also been seen to lessen the symptoms of depression similar to antidepressants. Antidepressants already in use tend to affect several other bodily procedures of a person such as an appetite, sex drive, moods, and sleep.

Hindrance in any of these processes can lead to deteriorating physical health of the individual. CBD has shown to have no such side effects.

Choosing the Best CBD Oils

With tons of similar products available in the market, it is hard to decide which one is right for you and your needs. With the ever-growing market of CBD products, there is CBD available for everything. 2 common forms of CBD are oils and creams. CBD oils are usually the type used for ingestion.

These oils are usually recommended for people who have some disorders or have pain complaints. This process, while quite common, also takes quite some time to get to show its effect.

Moving on to the purity of the product, CBD oils also have a few varieties of spectrums that are discussed below.

The first is full-spectrum. Full-spectrum means that the oil not only has CBD but also a few other chemicals extracted from the same plant. What these added chemicals do is that they start to work synergistically together to enhance the working power of CBD. This is called the entourage effect.

The second is a broad spectrum. Broad-spectrum has all the chemicals of a hemp plant in it, along with CBD, other than THC. Since THC in full-spectrum tends to show up in drug tests, to avoid it, one can go for a broad spectrum.

The third is isolates. Isolates mean that the end product has only pure CBD and nothing else. This means that the functioning factor is only CBD. Isolates are ideal for people with a sensitive gut as they have nothing added to them. Isolates do take a longer time to show effects, more than full and broad spectrums.

Legality

Cannabis and other hemp plants are banned in most of the states and this is what has fed the negative stigma around anything originating from these plants. Their recreational use is one of the main reasons for its ban.

Due to a lack of knowledge among the general public, there may be some products that won’t be allowed in whatever state you live in. It is best to check your local rules and regulations for possession to make sure that you can receive whatever CBD product you’re interested in.

Dosage

Most oil packaging will mention the recommended dosage with age. It is better to start with the recommended dose. For first-timers, it is usually recommended to start small. This will allow the body to get accustomed to the new oils, highly recommended for people with a sensitive gut.

Starting small will also help you get to safely get to know if you’re allergic to some of the additives in the products. The recommended dose is usually anywhere from 20mg of CBD to 30mg of CBD. This roughly translates to 4 to 6 drops of CBD oil.

Could CBD oil be the key to improving your focus?

It’s the latest trend in a bottle, and its pain-dulling, stress-relieving benefits are well-documented. But could this oil also help up your productivity?

Words: Jonathan Wells

CBD: three little letters making big promises. It’ll relieve your pain! It’ll clear up your skin! It’ll prevent diabetes, cancer and a whole host of other disorders and diseases!

Will it now? The truth is that many of these alleged benefits are simply savvy advertising spiel, spun by salespeople trying to push this new purported ‘wonder substance’. But, if you’re looking for a cure-all to take the January blues away, CBD — an abbreviation of ‘Cannabidiol’ — is not it.

That’s not to say that it’s useless. In fact, there is one benefit to using CBD that could prove invaluable to the modern man — and that is its propensity to improve your focus. Because (here comes the science), this compound — one of 104 cannabinoids found in marijuana — allows more serotonin to flow to the brain, which in turn mildly sedates the receptor associated with anxiety, addiction and sleep.

In short, CBD can make you more alert, less distracted and sharpen your mind — and who amongst us couldn’t do with a touch more focus in our lives? So, to help you zero in on this one real benefit of CBD, we’ve rounded up the best ways to introduce it into your day-to-day routine.

Keep it uncomplicated with a simple oil and dropper

The easiest – and most effective – way to ingest CBD is through the oil. A couple of drops on the tongue, and you’ll start feeling the benefits almost immediately. Many clinic trials have found good evidence to show that CBD will help you curb the levels of cortisol — a chronically detrimental stress hormone — in your body, and a simple dropper is a quick fix should you need to calm down and focus on the go.

Try Minor Figures’ offering, CBD blended with coconut oil that the brand suggests you take after a hot cup of coffee — giving you a one-two punch of caffeine and cannabinoid. Or Vitality CBD could help; with their Vitamin A-infused offering that will maintain your iron metabolism and keep your vision clear. Alternatively, Aver are a new CBD lifestyle brand you can trust to incorporate the winning benefits of this compound into your everyday life. Formulated to give you a little lift to keep you centred and clear during turbulent moments, the brand’s Boost Oil is slickly designed, endlessly effective — and perfect for the office drawer.

CBD for Energy, Focus and Concentration: Can It Help?

The fast-paced times we live in make it difficult for us to focus during the day, with so much pressure and responsibilities at once. Our bodies have their limits, so expecting the optimal performance when you don’t give it the necessary time to restore is just wishful thinking. Many people are looking for a quick fix for their low energy levels and blunt focus — turning to caffeine, energy drinks, and other widely available stimulants.

Effective as they are in a short-term perspective, long-term use of stimulants has dangerous side effects, including addiction, cardiovascular problems, liver damage, and more.

This is where CBD comes in. Short for cannabidiol, CBD is a natural compound in hemp plants that have balancing effects on the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) — our prime self-regulatory network. CBD has many science-backed health benefits, such as sleep regulation, pain relief, immune support, neuroprotection, and more.

Recent research also shows that CBD can enhance focus and boost energy throughout the day.

Today we explain the mechanisms behind this phenomenon.

Does CBD Oil Help with Energy and Focus?

Although most people associate cannabis with sleepiness and low energy levels, CBD does exactly the opposite. CBD can be sourced from both hemp and marijuana, but most CBD products available for sale online are made from hemp. Hemp plants contain 0.3% of THC or less, which doesn’t produce intoxicating effects. Simply put, CBD won’t make you feel high and sleepy like the high-THC cannabis does.

Better yet, CBD can balance your neurotransmitters and alleviate certain symptoms that negatively affect your energy.

Energy-Boosting Properties of CBD

Our energy and concentration are influenced by many factors. Chronic health problems, such as sleep deprivation, diet, and stress can all compromise your productivity. At present, there’s not much evidence to support CBD’s ability to improve energy and focus.

According to one 2014 review of studies, CBD might promote wakefulness in some people, although these findings haven’t yet been confirmed clinically (1).

A 2015 randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study found that CBD improves facial emotion recognition, indicating the cannabinoid’s role in cognitive functioning and focus (2).

Although the research into the effects of CBD on energy and focus is in the early stage, many studies suggest that CBD may alleviate certain symptoms that compromise these parameters.

Here’s how CBD can help you boost energy throughout the day — in a not-so-direct way.

Anxiety Relief

Anxiety disorders often cause people to feel tired and have difficulty staying focused. CBD may help you fix the short attention span and boost energy by reducing anxious thoughts. CBD does that by regulating several neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin (3–4). However, CBD doesn’t affect them like caffeine or other natural stimulants; instead, the cannabinoid provides balance in the activity of these neurotransmitters, allowing the body to use them more effectively. CBD also modulates the GABA-A receptor, which is the “handbrake” of the nervous system (5).

Sleep Regulation

Lack of sleep is another contributor to low energy levels and poor focus. Even one night deprived of sleep can negatively affect your cognitive performance the next day. CBD may be able to help regulate sleep cycles (6). Most users report sedation at high doses of CBD taken in the evening, whereas lower doses in the morning are believed to boost alertness. This may have a profound impact on your sleep duration and quality. When you stay productive throughout the day, your brain will receive signals that it’s time to prepare for rest. On the other hand, when you feel sluggish and do literally nothing before the evening, your brain may wake up and give you a train of thought as you try to fall asleep. On top of regulating your daily functioning, CBD can reduce the REM phase disturbances and keep you longer in the deep sleep stage.

Pain Reduction

Chronic pain can cause you to struggle with concentration and experience fatigue. CBD can mitigate pain by reducing inflammation and altering the way pain signals are sent to the brain. Studies have mentioned CBD as a potential painkiller in conditions such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, migraines, post-surgery pain, and neuropathy (7).

Does CBD Help You Focus?

As mentioned, CBD interacts with the “feel good” hormones such as serotonin and dopamine. Every time you feel considerable stress, your body starts to produce cortisol. High cortisol levels may compromise your ability to focus and make you unable to maintain mental clarity. CBD may help manage this problem by interacting with the excretion of excess cortisol (8). As a result, the brain can release more dopamine and serotonin. These neurotransmitters affect memory, focus, energy, and motivation. Long story short, yes, CBD can help you focus on the important tasks you encounter each day.

How to Take CBD for Energy and Focus

You have plenty of CBD products to choose from, all of which can affect your body slightly differently. You need to consider things such as how long they take to get to work, how long they last, and if they provide consistent dosing. Here are some of the most common options out there:

  • CBD Oil – oils are the most common form of CBD. They are made of a whole-plant hemp extract and infused into an inert oil for higher bioavailability. CBD oil usually has a dropper that makes dosing more accurate than other forms. The effects of CBD oil are relatively fast-acting, although some people may dislike its taste.
  • CBD Capsules – capsules offer a convenient and discreet way to consume CBD. The majority of CBD capsules are available in an easy-to-take soft gel form. Each capsule contains a fixed dose of CBD, so there’s no need to play with a dropper or worry about the oil leaking into your bag. Although capsules have a delayed onset, their effects last longer than with oils. However, since the CBD is processed in the digestive system first, it may also lose some of its potency.
  • CBD Edibles – edibles have a lot of fans out there because they offer the most enjoyable way to take CBD — and a great diversity of products. You can choose between CBD gummies, protein bars, chocolates, honey sticks, cookies, and more. Edibles use the same route of administration as capsules, so they may need more time to kick in.
  • CBD Vapes – CBD vapes are picked due to their high absorption rate and fast-acting effects. When you inhale CBD in a vape pen, the compound absorbs through the lung tissue right into the bloodstream. With no first-pass metabolism in the liver, the CBD can reach the cannabinoid receptors faster and produce its calming effects within minutes after inhalation.
  • CBD Topicals – CBD topicals cover a wide range of products, including creams, lotions, balms, gels, shampoos, and bath bombs. Topical formulations are designed to target localized problems. Once rubbed into the affected area, the CBD interacts with the skin’s endocannabinoid system, easing the discomfort.

How to Choose the Right CBD Product for Energy

Which product you ultimately choose boils down to personal preference. You need to understand how a particular product will fit into your lifestyle. Is it suited for your working hours? Is it discreet? Do you even need a low-profile consumption form? Here are a few handy tips to determine which CBD product will be the right one for you:

  • Choose products with supportive ingredients – pay attention to all ingredients in your product. Some CBD extracts are enriched with caffeine or fruit extracts to compliment the energy-boosting benefits of cannabidiol.
  • Read third-party lab reports – reputable brands test their products in third-party laboratories for potency and purity. A certificate of analysis from such tests is proof of the product’s quality. The CBD market is unregulated because hemp-derived products are classified as health supplements. Thus, many fly-by-night vendors take advantage of that situation, churning out mislabeled, often downright dangerous products. Always look for the lab-reports on the brand’s website.
  • Consider the form – if you have no problems ingesting a botanical liquid, then CBD oil will be your best bet. For higher bioavailability and faster effects, you can pick CBD vapes. Capsules will be better if you live a busy life and take CBD on-the-go. Finally, a CBD cream is a handy product for managing daily aches and taking care of the skin.
  • Find the right potency – the amount of CBD per serving varies between different products. Their bioavailability is also different depending on the type, so once you’ve figured out the right form of CBD, you need to consider the potency. The concentration of CBD per bottle is expressed in milligrams. Manufacturers also have their own dosage guidelines based on a single recommended serving.

Safety and Side Effects of CBD

Studies have found that CBD is safe for human consumption. There are a few mild side effects, though, such as:

  • Changes in appetite
  • Dry mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue

Since CBD is fat-soluble, consuming it along with fatty food can significantly increase CBD blood concentration, increasing your chances of experiencing these side effects. On top of that, CBD interacts with a lot of prescription and nonprescription medications. If your doctor has warned you against taking your meds with grapefruit juice, then you shouldn’t mix it with CBD either. CBD and grapefruit both change the way your liver processes active ingredients in drugs.

It’s always best to consult your doctor to be on the safe side when using CBD for energy and focus if you take any medications.

Other Ways to Build Energy and Boost Focus

People build stamina and increase focus in many other ways than taking CBD. Some natural methods to boost energy include:

  • Getting the right amount of quality sleep
  • Eating food that has a dense nutritional content
  • Staying active
  • Avoiding alcohol use and smoking
  • Managing stress
  • Drinking enough water
  • Taking health supplements

If you’re chronically tired and can’t focus on important tasks, it might be a good idea to seek medical advice.

Summarizing the use of CBD for Energy

CBD isn’t a stimulant like coffee or energy drinks. Instead, CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system to regulate the activity of different neurotransmitters and hormones that control your cognitive functions and energy levels. Moreover, CBD can reduce pain, improve sleep, and ease anxiety — all of which are known contributors to fatigue and problems with concentration.

Consistent supplementation with CBD may balance vital mental processes to keep you naturally in tune with your body and remain productive throughout the day without sacrificing your well-being.
