Taking CBD Before a Presentation, Interview, or Speech

I vividly remember anxiously waiting on my name to be called. My heart was already racing & now I could feel my face turning beat red. Suddenly even breathing became hard to do. As I stand up in front of the class, I try muttering out words while my voice shakes in fear & my eyes tear up.

I couldn’t get past the feelings of potential embarrassment & the unrealistic idea that everyone would start laughing out loud & calling me stupid. But my one saving grace has been Cannabis.

Studies have shown CBD can positively impact performance when it comes to public speaking. Allowing patients to perform with less discomfort in speech performance & a reduction in stress responses such as elevated heart rate/blood pressure.

The Proofs in The Pudding

Two studies performed in 2011 & 2017 observed the effect of CBD on public speaking.

2011 Study

The 2011 study included both healthy patients & patients with SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder). 24 patients with SAD whom had never tried CBD prior to the study were given either placebo or 600mg of CBD in a double blind randomized design. The 12 healthy patients used as the ‘control’ were not given any medication.

Subjective ratings on the Visual Analogue Mood Scale & Negative Self Statement were observed alongside physiological measures such as blood pressure, heart rate, & skin conductance.

For the patients who received CBD: it “significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, & discomfort in their speech performance & significantly decreased alert in their anticipatory speech.” Placebo patients had higher levels of anxiety, cognitive impairment, discomfort, & alert levels when compared to the control group.

2017 Study

This study was prompted to see whether the “anxiolytic effect of CBD in humans follows the same pattern of inverted U-shaped dose-effect curve observed in many animal studies.” Sixty healthy patients, male & female, aged 18 – 35 were assigned to five groups at random.

Groups received either placebo, clonazepam, or one of three amount of CBD (100, 300, 900mg). Subjects were then asked to perform a test of public speaking in front of the other participants. Patients were observed using the same Visual Analog Mood Scale alongside blood pressure & heart rate. After five separate sessions the data was revealed:

To begin they observed an increase in the above listed measures across the board. The scores, relative to the placebo group, were much better for those who received either clonazepam or 300mg of CBD.

That’s A Lot of CBD

Yes, 300 & 600mg of CBD is a significant amount. However these studies both utilized pure, isolate CBD powder with 99% purity.

This is important because as we know using CBD isolate requires much higher doses. When you use a full-spectrum CBD product the dosages needed are reduced significantly!

In case you don’t already know this is because the Entourage Effect. Which essentially boils down to the fact that CBD works much better, at much lower doses when alongside its fellow cannabinoids such as THC, CBG, & CBN to name a few.

So, opt for a full-spectrum product & you can see results with much lower doses than these.

A Few Important Tips

Now although the studies included those who have never taken CBD before, we highly recommend doing so before your big day.

It can take time & experimentation to see what dosage works for you. As we see in the 2017 study, more CBD doesn’t always equal more benefit. Which is why we urge customers to start at a lower dosage & slowly explore higher doses & if they make you feel better or worse.

You don’t want to go into your presentation or interview with too little or too much CBD in your system. This could result in either no change in your anxious feelings or if you take too much you might fall asleep before you even get started!

This is why it’s important to start taking CBD days/weeks before the big day. So, you can hone in on what dosage works best for you. Also, CBD can take time to buildup in your body & works much better when taken consistently over time.

Researchers have been studying the anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects of CBD for many years now.

Researchers are super interested in CBD because it doesn’t seem to have any negative side effects, even at really high doses!

CBD (cannabidiol) is the non-psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis plants. It doesn’t get you high. That’s THC’s job.

A lot of people like to smoke high percentage THC containing marijuana because the high it brings calms them down.

They like getting high because it helps them relax.

If THC works for you, we are all for that!

But if you are like me, the THC in marijuana actually makes your more anxious.

THC doesn’t calm me down, it makes my mind race too much. It makes my thoughts over active and unorganized.

That’s why I don’t use marijuana very much anymore.

Researchers first became interested in using CBD for anxiety when they noticed that CBD was decreasing the high brought on by THC.

The researchers thought: “Hmmm…if CBD kills the psychoactive effects of THC, maybe CBD could kill the anxious thoughts and increased psychoactivity of people suffering from anxiety!”

Logical, for sure.

And definitely worth studying, especially because CBD has far fewer negative side effects than most of the commonly used anti-anxiety medications prescribed by doctors.

This is what the researchers did:

Volunteers for the study were told to prepare a 4 minute speech on a topic from a course they had taken that year.

They were told the speech would be filmed for later analysis by a psychologist.

Each volunteer gave the speech while viewing themselves on a video monitor.

Their anxiety levels were measured using something called the Visual Analogue Mood Scale (VAMS).

The VAMS test measures anxiety, physical sensation, mental sedation, and feelings of interest.

These factors were tested at five distinct time points: baseline (before the start of the speech), right before instructions were given, right before giving the speech, in the middle of the speech, and right after the speech.

Researchers also measured the heart rate and blood pressure of the volunteers.

The volunteers were randomly given one of four drugs: 300 mg of CBD, 5 mg of isapirone (research chemical for depression/anxiety), 10 mg of diazepam (Valium), or a placebo.

The results were fantastic in showing how good CBD can be for anxiety!

Volunteers who received CBD, diazepam (Valium), and isapirone all showed a decrease in anxiety and systolic blood pressure.

Volunteers who got the diazepam (Valium) experienced feeling physical sedation.

Volunteers who got CBD and isapirone did not experience physical sedation, mental sedation, or other negative side effects.

The study confirmed that CBD can be an effective way to manage anxiety without negative side effects.

What would you rather take: Valium (could make you foggy or sleepy and requires a perscription), isapirone (I don’t even know if you could easily get your hands on this one…plus it’s hard to pronounce!), or CBD (an all natural, over the counter plant medicine which has been used since before Christ’s time)?

I know which one I would pick.

I would always rather go with a plant based medicine over a synthetic chemical with negative side effects.

All the good, without the bad

If you’re like most people and you get anxious about public speaking, give CBD a try.

It may just be the best tool in your kit for delivering some kick ass presentations.

The volunteers who participated in the study were given a 300 mg oral dose of CBD.

While CBD has been proven to be safe in very high doses, that’s still a much bigger dose than we would recommend you take.

At least don’t start with a dose that high.

We always recommend that you start low and work your way up.

No matter what kind of dose you take, make sure you get your CBD from a quality source.
