THE ROLE OF INFLAMMATION IN DOG ARTHRITIS
Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that often occurs in a dog’s legs or lower back. In a healthy dog, cartilage serves as a lubricant for the joints.
Unfortunately, over the years, it deteriorates due to factors including age, nutrition, breed size, genetics, infections, injuries, obesity, and activity. The result is inflamed joints that cannot move freely; the friction causes pain, swelling, and even bone spurs.
There’s no cure for arthritis, so veterinarians usually focus on managing the symptoms.
Arthritis will worsen over time, so your goal as pet parents is to slow that deterioration down as much as possible.
One way to do that is to reduce the strain on your dog’s joints. Low-impact exercise like walking or swimming may help strengthen the surrounding muscles, reducing pressure on the joints.
You can add supplements like glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and hyaluronic acid to your dog’s diet to promote lubrication of the joints.
If your dog’s arthritis is more severe, surgery is a course of action vets may recommend. But this can be very tough on dogs due to the effects of anesthesia and runs a 5-10% risk of serious complications. The high cost also makes it unavailable to many pet parents.
For these reasons, vets most often turn to NSAIDs like Carprofen, Previcox, Meloxicam, or Galliprant. These drugs can help reduce pain and inflammation in arthritic dogs and are a relatively low-cost option, but there are risks. When used long-term, they may cause ulcers, liver damage, and kidney damage. They are often used to treat arthritis in dogs for years, yet the most extended safety study is only six months.
For this reason, you must have bloodwork done at the vet periodically to monitor your dog’s health when using them. Unfortunately, NSAIDs are no longer an option for your dog if organ damage occurs.
As NSAIDs are risky for long-term use, many pet parents seek natural alternatives to help their dogs live more comfortably.
IS CBD GOOD FOR DOGS WITH ARTHRITIS?
Science hasn’t definitively proven that CBD is good for dogs with arthritis. But experiences of pet parents and many small studies provide more than a hint at the possibilities.
A 2020 study showed that dogs diagnosed with arthritis significantly improved their quality of life with CBD treatments.
According to a 2018 clinical trial, giving dogs with osteoarthritis 2 mg/kg of CBD twice a day can improve their comfort and activity .
We found further scientific evidence of CBD’s therapeutic effects in a study of blood samples from 6 healthy German Shepherds. The researchers added chemicals to get an inflammatory response in the blood. The CBD was able to reduce inflammation .
Because CBD functions similarly in dogs and people, we can look at human scientific studies to gain more understanding.
A 2015 study on inflammation found that topical application of CBD has therapeutic potential to relieve arthritis pain and inflammation with zero evidence of side effects .
These findings are all very promising, but are there any downsides to CBD for dogs, and what do you need to know before using it?
Possible Side Effects
CBD can have some side effects. Dizziness, dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, and an upset stomach are the most common ones. Recent studies indicate an increase in certain enzymes and proteins in the liver is possible after CBD treatment.
These side effects are relatively harmless to your dog and usually disappear with use over time. They are also reversible by lowering the dose or discontinuing the product’s use. If you have doubt, consult with your veterinarian, and ask if CBD is an option for your best friend’s condition.
How do you give CBD to a dog?
There are several ways to give CBD to a dog with arthritis, including drops, chews, or treats. The best option will depend on your dog and how cooperative they may or may not be.
CBD oil, placed in your dog’s mouth, has been shown in research to have the best absorption rate, as it bypasses the first-pass effect. However, this isn’t always possible as some dogs are anxious or apprehensive, so many parents turn to chews or treats.
The first-pass effect happens when CBD is eaten in chew or treat form or placed on your dog’s food and swallowed. The liver processes CBD before reaching the bloodstream, and quite a bit is lost.
Look first to CBD oil for your dog, but if that isn’t an option, look to treats with a dosage that considers the first-pass effect.
Where to buy CBD oil for dogs with arthritis
When deciding where to buy CBD oil for dogs with arthritis, you generally have two choices; online or in-store. They both have benefits and disadvantages.
With an online purchase, you benefit from being able to research the company and its products. However, you will have to wait a few days for shipping, which can be difficult if your dog is suffering.
In-store is more convenient and immediate, but you risk making a less informed purchase. If you can’t easily check the lab results, you won’t know how much CBD is in the product, if any.
How to Choose The Best CBD Oil For Dogs With Arthritis
Finding the best CBD oil for dogs with arthritis can seem daunting as there are so many options available. Every newspaper and magazine is suddenly an expert on animal health, and unsurprisingly, every company claims to be the best.
If you talk to veterinarians studying CBD for dogs and pharmacists who understand how it compares to current arthritis dog medications, you quickly realize that very few products are likely to help your dog. New research has shown that some products can have more adverse side effects too.
Here are some of the initial things to look for to give your dog a better chance of safely attaining relief.
Quality ingredients are the starting point of a good CBD product for dogs. Ensure the CBD comes from hemp grown organically in the USA and is traceable to the seed. With treats and chews, make sure they contain only human-grade ingredients. You wouldn’t want to eat cheap fillers and meals, and your dog shouldn’t either.
It’s tempting for companies to save money by automating the customer service process or outsource it to a foreign country. When buying a CBD product for dogs with arthritis, you may need expert advice. So pick a company you can contact quickly by phone, with US-based knowledgeable customer service.
Third-party lab testing is when a company sends its products off to have them independently verified for potency by an accredited lab. The results show you how much CBD is in the product and helps you ensure there isn’t anything that shouldn’t be. Informed consumers can also check when it was made to ensure its freshness.
CBD isn’t cheap, so we suggest not to shop based on price alone. More affordable products will generally contain less CBD, which science has shown to be less effective than more concentrated products. Often the cheapest products don’t even contain CBD, like hemp seed oils.
An excellent way to make sure your dog benefits from CBD is to buy from a reputable company with a rock-solid guarantee. A guarantee will ensure they aren’t just in it for a quick buck and believe in their products.
Has the company been in business for only a few months? Do they specialize in animal CBD products, or did they relabel human products for pets? Is their dosage well thought out and specific to weight? Did you hear about them through a sponsored article or paid review?
These are just a few of the questions you need to ask yourself to make sure you buy from a company that wants the best for your dog. Check out the free guide below; it covers five things to avoid when purchasing CBD for your dog and will help your fur family find a product that works.

Can You Give CBD Oil to Dogs?
CBD oil for dogs is growing in popularity in Ireland with owners who are looking for alternative health treatment for their pets. Dogs suffer as humans do with many health issues and diseases such as arthritis, pain, epilepsy and various skin disorders.
CBD products are perfectly safe for your pets once you ensure the Cannabidiol (CBD) you are buying is of high quality, without THC and the company can provide a large number of positive reviews from customers.
As I will review below, Dr. Hemp Me is a trusted CBD oil brand especially when it comes to CBD oil for dogs. Their canine CBD products are salmon flavoured so your pooch can enjoy their dinner or treat with some salmon oil that delivers all of the health benefits of CBD!
CBD Pet oil is certainly on the rise and filtering down to the health needs of our beloved pets too. Let the compounds of the cannabis plant work with your pet’s Endocannabinoid system…
How Long Does it Take to Work?
The length of time it takes for CBD oil to take effect on your dog will vary depending on the dog, the health complaint and the quality of the CBD oil also. In my own experience with giving CBD to a pet dog it only took 1-2 weeks to see an improvement. This of course will vary and will also depend on how consistent you are being in administering CBD to your animal.
I have often heard from people that CBD did not work for their pets or that they saw no benefit to the product they bought. This can be down to buying a low-quality oil but more often than not it is the dosage and the consistency in supplying this dosage to your dog that is the reason it did not work.
A lot of people can be lazy or forgetful with supplements and CBD is no different. This blog highlights the importance of consistent treatment of your dog in Ireland.
I can’t stress enough how necessary it is to be consistent when you decide to start giving your dog CBD oil. The dog will then be getting a consistent supplement level as CBD will be slowly building up in their system. Giving CBD for two days and then stopping for two and starting again may happen to help with minor conditions.
But, more often than not to see real improvements a consistent dose is needed (at least for the first few weeks). Ingredients such as hemp need as much consistency as general medications to ensure they have to time to build up inside the body. Blog sites have much anecdotal evidence of CBD oil helping pets regain their normal daily function following many days of seizures. If results like this can be achieved it is certainly worth this natural shot!
How Often Do You Give CBD to Your Dog?
As mentioned above…consistency is key here! Another question frequently asked is, can I give CBD oil to my dog everyday?
The answer is yes you can. You can give your dog the CBD every day and simply stick to the same number of drops for the first while. If you feel after a few weeks that your pet needs a bit more or you want to try this out then you can increase the drops however the original dose may be enough, time will tell.
The easiest way to give your dog their CBD supplement is to add it to their food either in the morning or evening whichever suits you most. Mix the oil in so that they don’t get a strong taste in one spot of their food as this may put them off. Another option is to break a dog treat in half and drop oil into the centre of the treat so the dog can eat it quickly without noticing a taste.

Is CBD Oil for Dogs different than for Humans?
CBD oil for dogs is no different than CBD oil for humans, you will be happy to find out. The only difference is the way in which you administer the oil to the dog and the strength of the CBD oil you give them.
Dogs and other animals do not need as high a CBD concentration as humans in general however larger dogs may need higher strength oil/ higher dose than smaller dogs. Some smaller dogs with more debilitating health conditions may also need the same higher strength oil/ higher dose so it really depends on both the size of the dog and what you are treating them for.
As a general rule of thumb for dogs 2.5% (250mg) CBD oil or 5% (500mg) CBD oil is high enough in terms of oil.
5% (500mg) CBD oil could be more suitable for larger dogs or dogs with more severe symptoms in terms of pain and inflammation.
2.5% (3000mg) CBD oil is suitable for all and is a great place to start with your pet. Read on to find our more about using CBD oil for your dog and even your cat.
Are there any Side Effects for Dogs?
Generally I have not seen any side effects when administering CBD oil to my own dogs but there was one exception. I have an older dog with an itchy skin condition his whole life due to an unknown allergy.
I used CBD oil on two separate occasions to help his skin however he developed diarrhoea each time so I did not administer it any more. This dog has always had a very sensitive bowel since he was a puppy so the CBD oil did not agree with his digestive system.
Since then I have used Hemp oil topically to treat the area and this has helped. So, be mindful that CBD oil will not suit all dogs just as it may not suit all people. Fatigue, nausea, diarrhoea are other side effects noted by researchers online but as always side effects do not occur in every case.
If you are unsure about giving CBD to your pet please contact your vet.
How Much Should I Give to My Pet With Anxiety?
As with humans, anxiety in dogs does not require high strength CBD oil or in other words a high concentration of CBD. Thankfully relatively low strength CBD oil is sufficient to relieve a pet’s anxiousness. In my own experience a 2% – 5% CBD oil concentrate is enough to treat anxiety in a dog, or cat!
Of course there are other factors to consider like the severity of the anxiety and the size of the animal. The amount of CBD oil you use should always start at a low point and slowly increase if you feel necessary, regardless of the severity and size of the animal.
All dogs and cats should be given the chance to adjust to the new supplement in their diet and build CBD oil up in their system over a period of time. That is why consistency with CBD oil is key!
How About Cats?
Yes, cats can also take CBD oil…
Like humans and dogs, cats also have an Endocannabinoid system which interacts with cannabinoids. It is an easy addition to strong tasting wet food that is typically given to cats. Or even dropped over dried food too.
